Ultrasound is absolutely indispensable in reproductive assessment for both natural coverings and artificial insemination. It allows us to perform a full pre-breeding assessment of the mare's reproductive tract to check that she is as fertile as possible - ensuring the health and receptivity of the uterine lining and activity of the ovaries. Closer to the time of covering, ultrasound is used to accurately establish the stage of the cycle, size of the growing follicles on the ovaries and thus predict time of ovulation. Post-covering ultrasound can be used to check that the conditions remain optimal for implantation in the uterus, and of course between days 15-17 to confirm pregnancy. In the case of twinning, ultrasound enables accurate early diagnosis of the condition so attempts can be made to reduce the pregnancy to a single embryo with a higher chance of survival.
