Stable Close Equine Practice carries out a large number of pre-purchase examinations (or vettings), both for existing clients and new clients of our practice.
We believe that the key points to successful pre-purchase examination are a thorough examination, experienced interpretation and excellent communication with you, the purchaser. Malcolm Morley, one of the partners of Stable Close Equine Practice is Chairman of the British Equine Veterinary Association's Pre-Purchase Examination Committee and all our veterinary surgeons have attended pre-purchase examination courses. As well as our normal practice area in Hampshire (shown in green below), we are frequently asked to travel further afield in Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Sussex. The area we routinely cover is shown in orange.
If you would like to arrange a vetting, you can either telephone our office on 01962 779111 or alternatively book online using this link. It would be useful to have the following information available before you phone.
Q. What does a vetting cover?
A. The normal procedure of a five-stage pre-purchase examination is described in the BEVA/RCVS Guidance Notes on the Examination of a Horse on Behalf of a Prospective Purchaser.
Q. How long does a vetting take to complete?
A. About 1½ to 1¾ hours.
Q. Can we travel further afield to carry out a pre-purchase examination?
A. We have been asked to vet horses across the UK and in Europe. Please feel free to ask if you would like us to a distant vetting on you behalf. Vettings in Holland, Germany or other parts of Europe can be carried out on a daily rate plus travel costs
Q. What facilities are needed?
Q. Should I get x-rays taken as part of the vetting?
A. In some cases we may recommend that x-rays are taken because of a particular concern.
For high value horses x-rays are taken routinely and they may be required by your insurer. A full set of x-rays commonly includes front feet, all four fetlocks, hocks and stifles. We use a modern mobile digital x-ray system to produce high-quality x-rays on site.
Q. Should I be present at the vetting?
A. This is not essential, but there are often
things best discussed with you while looking at the horse, rather than over
the phone. We advise that if possible you should be present.
Q. Can we perform a shorter vetting?
A. Whilst we normally perform a complete five-stage vetting, it is possible to perform a shorter two-stage examintion if the potential purchaser is prepared to sign a standard disclaimer.
Q. Can we perform a vetting if the seller of the horse is also our client?
A. Yes, but only if we can truly act on behalf
of the purchaser. That means the person selling the horse must agree to full disclosure of
anything we know about the horse.
