A non-invasive therapy that can speed the healing of some orthopaedic and soft tissue injuries.

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that can speed the healing of some orthopaedic and soft tissue injuries. It has been used in human medicine to treat injuries such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries and calcifying tendonitis of the shoulder. Since 2000, it has been used increasingly in equine sports medicine.

How does it work?

A high-powered focused acoustic wave is generated through the tissue which is thought to cause an inflammation response and may support healing by increasing blood circulation and metabolism in the treated region. It is also thought to overstimulate nerves which can reduce sensitivity and pain.

What is it used for?

The most common use in horses is for treatment of proximal suspensory ligament injuries (suspensory desmitis). Shockwave therapy is often used in conjunction with rest and other therapies to help return the horse to soundness.  Our shockwave machine is completely portable and can be brought out to your yard. The treatment can be uncomfortable, and so horses are always sedated.
